CFD Simulations of Fire Propagation in Horizontal Cable Trays Using a Pyrolysis Model with Stochastically Determined Geometry

Abstract In this paper, a pyrolysis model for PVC cable is constructed using results from thermogravimetric analysis, microscale combustion calorimeter and cone experiments. The used to simulate fire propagation in horizontal trays. simulated arrangement corresponds tray experiment OECD PRISME 2 project. As laying the cables loosely along trays random process, novel stochastic method developed making simplified geometries computational fluid dynamics model. addition, as geometry has significantly smaller surface area than real full of cables, was parametrically adjusted. contrast most earlier published numerical approaches simulating fires, presented approach does not use empirical correlations predicting require any full-scale experiments calibrating simulation are compared experimental terms heat release rate, mass loss, ignition times lateral flame spread rates. maximum rate overpredicted by 8% on average.
